Synopsis:
Asian markets set for negative start to Monday trade with tariff uncertainty weighing on sentiment. Futures pointing to steep opening declines in Japan and Hong Kong. ASX selling off in initial trade. S&P 500 futures extending Friday's sell-off. Big bond rally with Australian yields seeing double-digit declines. Dollar weakening against yen, firming against Aussie and kiwi. Crude flat following Trump's sanctions warning. Gold logging new record high. Bitcoin steady.
Markets remain captive to trade headlines ahead of Wednesday's reciprocal tariff announcement. Latest press reports note Trump privately pushing more aggressive approach and recently revived idea of universal tariffs. Final composition of reciprocal tariffs also remains up in the air with Trump reportedly causing internal confusion about his intentions and siding with trade hawks over advisers pushing for targeted approach. Sectoral tariff announcement could also be made on 2-Apr, adding to the uncertainty.
In other developments, Bloomberg highlighted China government plans for $69B capital injection in big four China banks as part of efforts to increase lending capacity. China, Japan and South Korea trade officials met on weekend, pledging closer economic ties and renewing efforts to discuss free trade deal. South Korea short selling ban to be fully lifted from today. South Korea industrial production rebounded as expected. Nikkei sources noted SoftBank (9984.JP) eying $1T of US investment in AI robot industrial parks.
Big week coming up with Trump to make announcement on reciprocal tariffs (Wed). RBA (Tues) expected to leave cash rate unchanged while Governor Bullock testifies on Thursday. China official manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMIs (Mon) expected to show modest improvement though Caixin manufacturing PMI (Tues) seen weaker. BOJ Tankan (Tues) expected to show manufacturer sentiment remained positive. Asia PMIs on Tues. US economy another focus with nonfarm payrolls (Fri), ISM manufacturing (Tues) and services PMI out.
