Apr 14 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures lower after stocks added to last week's rally. Australian bonds strengthening following earlier Treasury curve bull steepening. Dollar steadying following latest decline on major crosses. Crude unchanged with gold also flat after pulling back from record high. Bitcoin little changed following modest overnight gains.

    • Trump administration formally launched national security probes into pharmaceuticals and semis before potential tariffs. Trump himself foreshadowed new tariff rate on semiconductors to be announced soon and he has previously threatened tariffs on pharmaceuticals. At same time Trump flagged temporary tariff exemption for automakers, which follows Friday's move to exempt electronics from 10% baseline tariffs and 125% China tariffs. Press reports detailing White House demands in trade talks also being viewed as de-escalatory signal.

    • AAPL viewed as winner from electronics tariff exemption with stock extending its rebound. However, tariff reprieve didn't translate to notable strength in the semi space with SOX little changed. Asian semiconductor stocks strengthened Monday though gains were modest relative to preceding drawdown with chip tariffs still considered a matter of when not if. Meanwhile, Nasdaq Golden Dragon index strengthened 3% overnight after tech stocks drove Monday's upside in Hong Kong.

    • Rate reprieve also helped sentiment following big backup in Treasury yields last week that was seen to have dented their haven status. White House also playing down systemic implications with Treasury Secretary Bessent rejecting notion of foreign government selling and attributing volatility to deleveraging. Bessent also noted readiness to address dislocations if appropriate, for example with buybacks. Remarks echoed Boston Fed's Collins on Friday that Fed is ready to intervene if needed. Some strategists also eyeing potential bottom for Treasuries.
