The Asian Morning Preview will not be published on Good Friday 18-Apr. It will return on 21-Apr.
Synopsis:
Asian markets set for negative start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures flat following tech-led sell-off overnight. Australian yield curve bull flattening after Treasuries firmed while New Zealand yields remain lower after inflation topped forecasts. FX markets steady following broad dollar retreat. Crude and gold adding to earlier gains. Bitcoin flat.
Negative leads for Asian semis after SOX fell 4% amid an NVDA sell-off after group disclosed $5.5B hit from Trump administration's crackdown on H20 chips. Restriction on NVDA's H20s viewed as latest US efforts to tighten China's access to advanced technology amid the broader ramp in trade tensions. House committee report on Wednesday described DeepSeek as profound national security threat and urged NVDA to disclose further details on its sales to the AI startup.
Hawkish takeaways from Fed Chair's Powell's remarks also blamed for Wednesday's risk-off move after he warned of stagflationary consequences from larger-than-expected tariffs. Nothing in his remarks that gave clarity on potential Fed put with Powell reiterating patience stance, echoing remarks by other Fed speakers. Market pricing in ~90 bp of easing in 2025 with first cut expected in July. Powell also commented on Treasury volatility, noting markets remain orderly and still functioning.
US-China trade war continues after White House hiked tariffs up to 245% due to retaliatory action. Press describing efforts by China and US to win countries over to their side with White House reportedly aiming to isolate China in exchange for reduced tariffs. Meanwhile President Xi courting SE Asian nations including Vietnam and Malaysia, culminating in signing of trade and other agreements. Still, other articles describing China willingness in talks based on mutual respect and Trump also urging Beijing to negotiate.
