StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.47%, Hang Seng Futures +0.06%, ASX SPI 200 +0.35%, S&P Futures (0.20%)

Apr 29 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Wednesday trade. Futures pointing to mild opening gains in Japan and Australia, and flat start in Hong Kong. US contracts weakening amid negative reaction to afterhours earnings. Australian bond yields declining at the front end ahead of CPI data. FX markets steady after dollar index rose marginally on Tuesday. Crude extending losses towards two-week low. Gold and copper a touch weaker. Bitcoin retreating from earlier highs.

    • China PMIs forecast to show manufacturing activity fell back into contraction this month as tariffs went into effect. Follows multiple reports about slowdowns in factory production over recent weeks with import orders being cancelled and US-bound cargo shipments seeing marked decline. Separate non-manufacturing PMI forecast to have remained in slight expansion. Elsewhere, Australia CPI forecast to show headline inflation eased further towards bottom end of 2-3% RBA target midpoint. More important trimmed mean inflation also projected to fallen below 3%.

    • As foreshadowed, President Trump signed executive order preventing auto tariffs from stacking on top of other tariffs. In other trade news, Commerce Secretary Lutnick said trade deal reached with an unnamed country with announcement to come following their parliamentary approval. Meanwhile, Trump again voiced confidence about striking trade deal with China after Bessent said predictions of mass job losses would bring Beijing to the table. Publicly China continues to send message of defiance, leaving two sides no closer to rapprochement.

    • Several US firms reported afterhours. SMCI's (15%) preannouncement missed on top and bottom line, citing customer purchasing delays and higher inventory reserves. SNAP (14%) withheld Q2 sales guidance due to economic headwinds and related impact on advertising demand. SBUX (6%) same-store sales missed expectations with group also citing challenges from tariffs and volatile coffee prices. V +1% earnings topped forecasts with group emphasizing resilient business model in current macro environment.
