  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan while Hang Seng futures weaker and Australia tracking for flat start. US contracts flat afterhours. Australian bonds rallying, taking cues from earlier Treasury curve flattening. Dollar steady on major crosses after strengthening late following Fed statement. Crude flat while gold extending overnight declines. Bitcoin steady near Feb-2025 highs.

    • Mixed takeaways from Fed's hold decision with statement noting increased uncertainties about economic outlook. Also include new comment about increased risk of higher unemployment and inflation, reinforcing concerns about both sides of dual mandate. Chair Powell noted cases in which rates could fall, but reiterated patience stance amid uncertainty which side of the dual mandate will deteriorate first. CME's FedWatch shows markets pricing in 57% chance of July rate cut.

    • Trump tempered initial optimism about planned meeting between US and Chinese officials in Switzerland this weekend, saying he will not reduce 145% tariffs on China in order to bring Beijing to negotiating table. Bessent also reiterated planned meeting would not be "advanced" discussions, echoing comments on Fox News that talks more about de-escalation than a big trade deal. Despite the cautious comments, market continues to take comfort from series of de-escalation signals over past few weeks.

    • Tech headlines another driver of overnight price action with semis rallying following Bloomberg report Trump administration planning to rescind Biden-era AI chip curbs. Specifically, administration will not enforce AI diffusion rule as it looks to develop new guidelines. Separately, GOOGL suffered steep drop amid latest fears that AI supplanting search after Bloomberg report about AAPL exploring AI search to its browser. SOX finished at session highs, up 2%.
