  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for cautious start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Hong Kong, flat starts in Australia and Japan. S&P 500 futures swinging higher after Trump extended EU tariff deadline (US markets closed Monday for Memorial Day holiday). Australian and New Zealand bonds flat after Treasuries ended little changed Friday. Dollar rising against yen, steady against the other majors. Crude lifting alongside equity futures while gold pulling back. Bitcoin fluctuating after retreating from record high.

    • Trump extended EU tariff deadline from 1-Jun to 9-Jul following call with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen. De-escalation comes after Trump on Friday threatened 50% tariffs on EU due to insufficient progress in talks. Elsewhere on trade front, Japan's top trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa, held talks with USTR Greer and Commerce Secretary Lutnick on Friday and expressed aim of resolving differences before planned June meeting between Trump and PM Ishiba. Meanwhile, South Korean presidential frontrunner voiced skepticism in reaching trade agreement with US by 8-Jul given complications from 3-Jun election.

    • In corporate developments, Trump voiced support for US Steel (~X~) and Nippon Steel (~5401.JP~) partnership on Friday, touted economic benefits from latter's $14B investment plans. Reuters the latest to note ~NVDA~ plans to launch cheaper Blackwell AI chip for sale to China following US export controls on H20. China's market regulator published guidelines for merchant fees charged on online platforms such operated by firms such as JD.com (~9618.HK~) and Meituan (~3690.HK~).
