Synopsis:
European equity markets generally ended the day mixed to lower
Pan-European indices opened slightly higher, though quickly pared advances, before becoming range-bound in a narrow range either side of unchanged on the day for much of the session.
Denmark (0.9%) and Ireland, Norway both (0.6%) joining the CAC in leading underperformers and Greece +1.7%, Netherland +0.3% join the FTSE100 in leading outperformers.
Ukraine-Russia developments in focus with Trump planning to meet Putin in Alaska on Friday for talks. A statement was released over the weekend by European leaders on Peace for Ukraine, as European countries and Ukraine plan a counterproposal for a ceasefire amid reports Russia want to Ukraine to cede control of entire eastern Donbas area and Crimea. EU ministers for foreign affairs hold an informal meeting to discuss Russia's aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East (Finland government press release).
In Norway there's Arendal Week (through Fri), the largest political gathering in the country, with Nordic co-operation hosting several events, amongst others, and Norway's PM participates in the party leaders' debate later today (at 21:15CET, televised on NRK), coming ahead of the general election next month. Also at Arendal Week this evening, energy minister Aasland is a panellist at 19:00 in a debate addressing the future direction for offshore wind in Norway.
Also garnering a lot of column inches in the UK press over the weekend was how the Labour government and Chancellor Reeves would address the country's worsening fiscal situation in her Autumn Budget, that is still a couple of months away.
Topping the limited corporate news flow was Ørsted (ORSTED.DC), its shares plummeting following its Q2 earnings, updated medium term targets and confirmation of a DKK60B rights issue (related EGM on 5-Sep). In the DACH region, Aryzta (ARYN.SW) released H1 earnings while Salzgitter (SZG.GR) confirmed preliminary Q2 results with FY outlook unchanged. In the UK, Plus500 (PLUS.LN) reported H1 and announced a buyback of up to $90.0M, with Marshalls (MSLH.LN) also posting H1 earnings.
In M&A related news, Prosus (PRX.NA) obtains all regulatory clearances required to close the offer for Just Eat Takeaway.com (TKWY.NA) following EU Commission conditional approval of the deal, Nordfyns Bank (NRFD.DC) receives new merger offer from Middelfart Sparekasse, offer values Nordfyns Bank at DKK600/share, whilst Kinnevik (KINV.B.SS) participates in portfolio company Aira's €150M equity financing, EQT (EQT.SS) to acquire Remember at valuation of KRW500B ($400M/€309.0M) and ATP's completes the transfer of its controlling shareholding of Copenhagen Airports (KBHL.DC) to the Danish state. Also, reportedly, AXA Investment Management (CS.FP) in advanced talks to buy 30% stake in Telefonica (TEF.SM) -Vodafone Spain (ZEG.LN) fibre JV.
