Synopsis
European equity markets are set for a negative open on the last day of the year. Asia equities mixed in a very quiet session Wednesday with much of the region on holiday for the new year. Modest gains in Shanghai, Taipei and Mumbai, while benchmarks out of Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Singapore are all lower. US futures lower.
Light trading day expected with only markets in Belgium, France, Ireland, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the UK open. UK and Ireland close early at 12:30GMT for New Years Eve followed by Belgium, France, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain closing early at 13:00GMT. Rest of Europe (Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland) are closed and reopen on 2-Jan.
Guardian reports first-time buyers are expected to drive the UK housing market in 2026, with further interest rate cuts likely to improve stretched affordability. Says the for-sale market should accelerate moderately, with prices rising by 2% to 4%, while rent rises are likely to slow from the rapid increases of recent years.
Macro data expected include Portugal Dec preliminary CPI and Greece Oct retail sales.
In thin corporate news, Tinexta (TNXT.IM) announced Zinc BidCo (Advent and Nextalia) completed the acquisition of a 38.74% stake in Tinexta at €15/share and will launch a mandatory tender offer for the remaining shares. Saipem (SPM.IM) was awarded two offshore contracts in Saudi Arabia worth ~$500M under existing long term agreement with Aramco.
