Jul 31 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia stocks rallied Friday as South Korea's two big semiconductor stocks rose very sharply. Kospi finished almost 18% higher and came close to erasing this week's losses; Taiex and Nikkei 225 also saw significant gains. Mainland China boards bounced back, Hong Kong ended slightly higher. Singapore declined, while India is trading higher. US futures higher, Europe's Stoxx indexes opened at record highs. US dollar off overnight lows, yen weaker post last night's intervention, won at a nine-month high. Treasury and JGB yields mixed. Crude futures down sharply with Brent back below $86/bl. Precious metals off last night's high. Base metals rallying.

    • Asia technology stocks surged from the bell Friday amid renewed optimism around AI post the Nasdaq rally overnight and Microsoft's outlook on spending. Several other factors behind the Kospi's rise including reports Seoul was set to inject $14B into its sovereign wealth fund using AI assets, and news the SK Group chairman had bought a sizeable amount of SK Hynix stock. Volumes in Seoul were also notably higher versus this week's two significant down days. Semiconductor names at the core of the rally: SK Hynix (000660.KS) gained 30.0%, and Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) 26.8% while other regional names also outperformed with Advantest (6857.JP), SoftBank (9984.JP), TSMC (2330.TT), and Nanya Tech (2408.TT) all notable gainers. Late on, Kioxia (285A.JP) missed on quarterlies, perhaps to remind investors over underlying questions on valuations.

    • The Bank of Japan left base interest rates unchanged as widely expected, and upgraded its outlook for economic growth by calling risks 'balanced' from skewed to the downside. But it also hinted it would normalize policy settings and flagged the risk of underlying inflation rising beyond its 2% target. The decision came hours after a rate check and intervention in US trading hours that pushed the yen up by around 3% at one point although much of this was erased by the end of Asia's trading hours. South Korea forex authorities said they too had intervened on behalf of the won, which ended Friday at nine-month highs. Elsewhere, China official PMIs slipped into contraction although the NBS brushed it off as the start of the slow season. Japan June industrial production surprised to the upside while retail sales disappointed. Taiwan Q2 GDP growth was 12.9% y/y, slightly lower than Q1's 14.6%. Kioxia (285A.JP) quarterly results missed expectations, company announced a 3:1 stock split; stock suspended all day after hitting limit-up 18% without a trade being completed.

    • Daiichi Sankyo (4568.JP) was forced to correct Q4 and FY results due to errors found int SG&A expenses identified earlier this month; stock sharply lower. Sony Group (6758.JP) raised its FY outlook, said weaker yen is helping its returns, and assured gamers it has enough RAM to supply its PS5s for sale this year. DeepSeek (+DEEPSEEK) is developing a one gigawatt AI data center in Inner Mongolia while it continues to lease capacity from other companies, according to Bloomberg. Sinochem (600500.CH) has sold a 14% stake in Pirelli to a Czech-based billionaire, cutting its ownership to 20.1%. TSMC (2330.TT) is said to be developing a new AI chip packaging in response to Intel's product, according to TheInformation.
