StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Recap: Nikkei (3.16%), Hang Seng +0.09%, Shanghai Composite (2.40%) as of 04:10 ET

Aug 19 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities ended mostly lower Wednesday. More steep losses for the tech benchmarks in South Korea, Taiwan and Japan. Japan's Topix also sharply lower. Modest declines for Australia, India and Singapore. Mainland China benchmarks ended lower but Hong Kong stayed a few points above water. Southeast Asia showing weakness. US futures indicate a lower open, some small losses in Europe in the first hour. US dollar weaker, yen noticeably stronger, won also sharply stronger to break through 1,400 per dollar. Crude oil higher on the day but Brent remaining below $92/bl. Precious metals lower. Base metals mixed.

    • Asia equities finished lower for a second consecutive day Wednesday amid building concerns over bond yields, high crude oil prices, and fresh wobbles in the AI chain. Most major country benchmarks fell as the tech-leaning Kospi, Taiex, Nikkei and Shenzhen all underperformed while the Hang Seng hovered around the unchanged mark by the close. A sharp decline in the SOX chip index in the US, which led to a soft return for the Nasdaq, triggered the selloff as jitters over the sector's debt pile rose amid record-breaking bond yields. Today, Alphabet announced a 7% rate on its long-dated Australian dollar bond sale, which did little to calm nerves.

    • Elevated oil prices also weighed on sentiment with few signs of any meaningful breakthrough over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Brent traded just below $92/bl and WTI at $85/bl for much of the day, a level likely to keep interest rates and inflation in the region higher for longer, according to economists. In other developments, Singapore's monetary authority added new asset management incentives including a tax-exempt scheme to support the sector. Bank Indonesia kept its key interest rate unchanged at 5.75% for the third consecutive meeting.

    • Baidu (9888.HK ) posted its fifth consecutive revenue decline as ad sales dipped, AI lag widens; shares sharply lower in Hong Kong. Unitree Robotics (688836.CH ) surged 460% in its market debut in Shanghai amid thin liquidity and other trading restrictions; a Bloomberg report said YangTze Memory (0HCR9G-E) has moved closer to a Shanghai listing after completing exchange-required pre-listing work. ByteDance (+BYTE.HK ) attracted bids worth more than $30B for its planned syndicated loan, according to Bloomberg. AI video platform ShengShu Tech (0VBBNB-E) is said to considering a Hong Kong IPO. Xiaomi (1810.HK) saw Q3 profits decline by more than expected on memory shortages and higher costs. Hanwha Aerospace (012450.KS ) said it had won a contract to supply the US army with self-propelled howitzers. SK Hynix (000660.KS) announced a KRW40T ($28.6B) share buyback program on AI boom.
