  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets generally ended the day lower, though above the worst levels of the session seen in mid morning, and just below the highs seen late in the day. Shares traded in a relatively narrow range with brief move above and below the range, the STOXX Europe 600 fluctuating either side of unchanged, STOXX Europe 50 in slightly positive territory.

    • Ireland (2.1%), Austria (1.2%) and Norway (0.8%) lead underperformers and Switzerland +0.4%, Netherlands +0.3% join the CAC in leading outperformers

    • Market backdrop continue to include the fall-out from French political uncertainty and President Trump's move to fire Fed Governor Cook. Also Trump will chair a meeting on Gaza at the White House today, and regards the Ukraine war, the Kremlin rules out accepting NATO troops in Ukraine to end war whilst Kyiv admits Russia has entered key region.

    • Economic data included from Germany, consumer sentiment continued to weaken in Aug showing third decline in a row, from Swiss, economic sentiment plunged in Aug, and in the UK, CBI survey points to ongoing UK retail sector weakness. Also in the UK, Ofgem announces +2% q/q increase of the energy price cap for Q4.

    • In Germany, Chancellor Merz, ministry of defense Pistorius held a joint press conf following the morning's cabinet meeting (stream)

    • The Chancellor, along with France's President Macron and Poland's PM Tusk, will visit Moldova for country's Independence Day. All three will deliver short speeches in the evening, along with Moldovan President Sandu.

    • In Norway, at 21:15CET, PM Støre and Party Leaders Erna Solberg (Conservative Party/The Right) and Sylvi Listhaug (Progress Party) participate in public meeting in Trondheim broadcast by NRK.

    • In Finland, there's Europe Forum 2025 theme 'The world is changing - how will Europe respond?' (through Fri). Speakers include Finland's PM Orpo and EU's Virkkunen.

    • M&A news flow included PHP (PHP.LN) announces that the revised offer for Assura will close for acceptances at 13:00 BST on 10-Sep, currently has valid acceptances that will enable the following squeeze out. IMCD (IMCD.NA) to acquire Tillmanns S.p.A. for an undisclosed sum. Reportedly, Rheinmetall (RHM.GR) wants to take over the shipbuilder Naval Vessels Lürssen and Botswana hires Lazard as it seeks to take control of De Beers
