Synopsis
European equity markets are set to open in positive territory, amidst Asian equities trading higher Friday. Recovery of Greater China markets being led by mainland stocks. Japan and Taiwan indexes outperforming with Korea flat and Australia logging mild gain. S&P 500 futures up slightly afterhours.
On today's agenda, Chancellor Merz set to attend the inauguration of the first European exascale supercomputer, called "Jupiter". In the UK, Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, holds its annual conf (through Sat).
In trade developments, President Trump signed executive order implementing US-Japan trade agreement, formally establishing 15% tariff that also extends to autos and avoids tariff stacking. Japan to increase share of US rice imports under existing quota system to 75% and commit to annual agricultural purchases totalling A$8B.
Later Friday US nonfarm payrolls forecast to show another sub-100K headline print and unemployment rate nudging up to highest since Jul-2023. Weak July payrolls data and dovish-leaning remarks from Fed Chair Powell had already led markets to fully price in September rate cut with another reduction expected by year-end.
In central banks, Bundesbank's Köhler-Geib panellist at 13:15CET at State of Hesse's representative office in Brussels. Latvia central bank's Kazāka holds regular meeting with President Rinkēvičs.
European macro data releases due today include, UK Jul retail sales, Aug house price index - Halifax, Germany Jul factory orders, France Jul trade balance, Italy Jul retail sales, Norway Jul manufacturing production, Switzerland Aug consumer confidence - SECO, Eurozone Q3 final GDP, Austria Q2 final GDP, Ireland Q2 final GDP, Greece Q2 GDP
In corporate news, yesterday after the market closed, Sofina (SOF.BB) reported H1 earnings, whilst OSE Immunotherapeutics (OSE.FP) issued a presentation for its strategy for 2025-2028 ahead of the 30-Sept AGM. Elsewhere, Ørsted (ORSTED.DC) announced adjustment to full-year EBITDA guidance for 2025 following lower-than-normal offshore wind speeds during July and August. In other corporate developments, Temenos AG (TEMN.SW) announced that Jean-Pierre Brulard will be stepping down from the role of CEO, effective immediately. The board has appointed Takis Spiliopoulos, the company's CFO, as Interim CEO while the search for a permanent successor is underway.
In M&A, Hexagon AB (HEXA.B.SS) announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its Design & Engineering business, which includes the business formerly known as MSC Software, to Cadence Design Systems, Inc. for €2.7B. In France, the FT reported that Safran (SAF.FP) is weighing the sale of a large portion of its aircraft interiors business.
