Synopsis:
Asian markets set for quiet start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling flat opens in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. US contracts flat afterhours though ~ORCL~ +27% after disclosing significant increase in bookings and bullish outlook for cloud division. FX markets quiet following mild advance in dollar index. Oil extending gains with Israeli's strike in Qatar heightening Middle East tensions. Gold steady. Bitcoin remains rangebound.
Press sources said Trump asked EU leaders to impose tariffs of up to 100% on India and China as part of efforts to pressure Russia into ending war on Ukraine. US official added administration would match the tariffs. At same time Trump posted on Truth Social US-India negotiations continuing and he will be speaking to PM Modi in coming weeks, voicing optimism about coming to a successful conclusion. In other trade developments, South Korea officials in US for talks to work out details of July's trade deal and try to resolve differences over investment pledge.
In economic developments, Bloomberg sources said BOJ officials see possibility of rate hike this year with economy developing in line with expectations and US-Japan trade deal removing uncertainty. Comes as Reuters Tankan showed Japan manufacturer sentiment rose to highest since Aug-2022 following US-Japan trade deal. Japan 5Y bond auction coming up later though previews expect uneventful outcome. China CPI and PPI expected to show consumer prices fell back into contraction while factory-gate deflation persisted at similar pace.
Political fallout continues across Asia after Nepal's prime minister resigned following violent protests over government's (since reversed) ban on social media. With benchmark down 3% week-to-date, Indonesia's new finance minister sought to reassure markets over government's commitment fiscal restraint and vowed to coordinate with central bank to loosen liquidity. NHK reported Japan LDP has set 4-Oct as date for leadership vote to choose Ishiba's successor..
