StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.01%, Hang Seng Futures (0.76%), ASX SPI 200 (0.23%), S&P Futures +0.10%

Sep 10 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling unchanged open in Japan, negative starts in Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Australian bonds strengthening, taking cues from earlier Treasury curve flattening that followed soft PPI data and strong 10Y auction. Dollar little changed on major crosses going into US CPI. Crude steady near overnight highs. Gold flat. Bitcoin nearing three-week high.

    • US equities ended mixed in quiet Wednesday trade as markets await CPI later Thursday. Oracle's (~ORCL~) huge contract wins generated more AI hype, SOX outperforming main indexes with 2% gain. TSMC (~2330.TT~) also up 2% overnight following better-than-expected August revenue growth. Bullish narrative also playing out across Asia after all-time highs were achieved in Japan (LDP leadership contest and fiscal expansion hopes) and South Korea (tech rally, policy reforms), while Hong Kong reached highest in four years.

    • US August CPI forecast to show unchanged core inflation, with pressures continuing to be underpinned by import-sensitive categories amid tariff impacts. CPI report not expected to impact September rate cut expectations given Fed's heightened focus on labor market softening. However, some talk that a hotter reading could dampen recent pickup in expectations for 2-3 straight rate cuts to end 2025. Market was still pricing in around 66 bp of easing by year-end following cooler PPI data.

    • In latest trade/tariff developments, Reuters sources noted European Commission weighing including some China 'teapot' refiners in upcoming Russia sanctions package. However, EU unlikely to heed US calls to impose punitive tariffs on India and China over Russian crude purchases. More signs of thaw in US-India relations with Trump and Modi to speak in coming weeks while Bloomberg sources said Indian officials may visit Washington in coming days. Meanwhile, Mexico planning to tariffs of up to 50% on certain imports from China and other Asian countries.
