Sep 17 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling mild opening losses in Hong Kong and Australia, and flat start in Japan. S&P 500 futures gaining afterhours. Australian bond market weakness mirroring losses in Treasuries while front-end New Zealand yields moving lower on soft GDP data. Dollar strongest against kiwi, steady elsewhere after DXY managed small gain following Fed decision. Crude little changed while gold extending earlier pullback. Bitcoin pushing back up to four-week high.

    • Fed's 25 bp rate cut was widely expected though some thought that backup in bond yields a reflection of market disappointment rate path not as aggressive as 100 bp of easing that was being priced in over next year. Fed offered more pessimistic assessment on labor market though Chair Powell also described policy decision as "risk management cut" amid lingering risks surrounding inflation. Revealed no widespread support for 50bp cut and that Fed is in "meeting-by-meeting" situation with decisions to be guided by incoming data.

    • NVDA's pullback the other notable development following reports Beijing ordered tech firms to stop buying its chips, including latest model being designed for China. Development comes amid tensions over technology after China accused NVDA of violating anti-monopoly laws and US officials rejected Beijing's demands for full removal of tariffs and export controls. While NVDA underperformed, losses in other Mag 7 names were relatively mild with rotational flows also attributed for the weakness following post-Fed backup in bond yields.

    • In economic developments New Zealand Q2 GDP shrunk by more than economists and RBNZ had projected. Reflected broad-based weakness in manufacturing, construction and services, as tariffs, subdued consumer confidence and tepid housing market weigh on demand. Dovish reaction to data, which reinforced market expectations of further rate cuts by year-end. Coming up, Australia labor market data forecast to show unchanged unemployment rate and steady jobs growth.
