Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures up slightly afterhours following positive Thursday session attributed to resumption of Fed rate cuts. Australian bonds weakening on back of earlier Treasury curve bear steepening. FX markets steady after dollar index firmed. Crude and gold unchanged near overnight lows. Bitcoin little changed near one-month high.
Presidents Trump and Xi to speak 9:00 ET on Friday following talks in Madrid that appeared to produce agreement on TikTok. Technology may feature in talks after Beijing ramped up scrutiny on Nvidia this week. Trump sounded positive ahead of the call, saying two sides close to a deal and flagged another extension of tariff deadline beyond November. Recent press reports have also mentioned possibility of new China purchase commitments involving soybeans and Boeing (BA) aircraft.
BOJ expected to leave policy unchanged at Friday's meeting with previews noting board members still assessing tariff impacts, particularly on earnings and capex projections. Governor Ueda's press conference will be scrutinized for commentary on outlook for inflation and economy against backdrop of US-Japan trade deal, domestic political upheaval, elevated pricing pressures, and Fed's rate cut. Economists expect rate hike by January though views split between October and December.
