StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.73%, Hang Seng Futures (0.08%), ASX SPI 200 +0.27%, S&P Futures (0.11%)

Sep 21 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Australia, and flat start in Hong Kong. S&P 500 futures steady after benchmarks logged third straight weekly gain. Australian bonds weakening, tracking Treasury curve steepening on Friday. Dollar gaining against kiwi and Swiss franc, steady elsewhere. Crude steady following Friday's pullback while gold nudging back towards record high. Bitcoin flat.

    • China expected to keep 1Y and 5Y loan prime rates unchanged. Comes after PBOC left 7D reverse repo rate unchanged Friday. Takeaways from weak August activity data reinforced calls for more policy support though economists see scope for only incremental measures with China's stockmarket rally being viewed as constraint to further rate cuts. RBA Governor Bullock will testify before House of Representatives where she may be probed on her assessment of labor market following weak August data.

    • Nothing incremental on trade as US and India resume talks ahead of Commerce Minister Goyal's arrival in Washington. India's purchases of Russian crude remain a sticking point (Bloomberg sources noted US will tie India's oil purchases to trade talks), along with Delhi's reluctance to open its dairy and agriculture markets. US-South Korea talks at an impasse after last week's talks failed to break deadlock over investment (Seoul argued need for FX swap arrangement to facilitate follow-through of its investment commitment).

    • In other developments, Trump-Xi call on Friday mostly a non-even with two set to meet at APEC summit in South Korea next month. Contours of agreement on TikTok was the big story going into talks while Trump also mentioned progress on fentanyl and trade. Trump administration's move to impose $100K fee for H-1B visas on Friday another talking point with decision seen aimed at India. More press discussion of China's tech-led stockmarket rally.
