  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets ended mostly higher Tuesday. UK softer. Retail, autos and travel best performers, while healthcare, telecom and insurance the main laggards. Follows softer close on Monday.

    • Risk appetite supported on optimism around all things AI following ~NVDA~ $100B investment pledge into OpenAI. In macro, focus initially on PMIs and Riksbank decision. Eurozone business activity accelerated to fastest pace in 16 months during Sep, with HCOB Flash Composite PMI rising to 51.2 from Aug's 51.0, beating analyst expectations of stability at 51.0. Conversely, UK private sector growth decelerated markedly in Sep, with S&P Global Flash Composite PMI tumbling to 51.0 from Aug's 12-month high of 53.5, significantly undershooting economist forecasts of 53.0 and marking weakest expansion since May. In Germany, composite PMI beat at 52.4 supported by jump in services while France composite PMI missed at 48.4. Elsewhere, Spain trade balance deficit widens to (€4.01B) vs consensus (€2.8B) and prior (€3.59B). In central banks policy, Riksbank cut rates 25bps to 1.75% in a finely balanced meeting. Board attempting to support economy, seeing high inflation as transitory. Meanwhile, German Institutes revises up 2025 economic growth at 0.2%, 2026 at 1.3%, 2027 at 1.4%, Reuters reports.

    • On the political front, ongoing focus in UK on impact of potential tax hikes in 26-Nov budget. In Germany, Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil presented today plans to invest a record amount of ~€127B in 2026, warning however government would need to control spending to plug a €30B hole in its budget for the next year.

    • In corporate news flow, shares of Ørsted (ORSTED.DC) higher following Court preliminary injunction allowing Revolution Wind impacted construction to resume. Shares of Kingfisher (KGF.LN) jumps after posting better-than-expected H1 numbers this morning with FY adj PBT and FCF also expected to be ahead. Smiths Group (SMIN.LN) released FY results and update on strategy. Out of DACHs, TUI Group (TUI1.GR) issued a pre-close trading update ad group says it is on track to deliver raised FY25 underlying EBIT growth as announced in Aug. Shares of ASM International (ASM.NA) are trading lower following Investor Day update with the group now anticipating Q4 revenue to be below earlier expectations. Renalytix (RENX.LN) drops post revised guidance. Santhera Pharmaceuticals Holding (SANN.SW) also down following H1 numbers and new financing agreements.

    • In M&A headlines, media reports L'Oreal (OR.FP) would only want to buy Armani's money-making beauty operation. Heineken (HEIA.NA) to acquire FIFCO's (FIFCO.CR) beverage and retail businesses. Advanced Drainage Systems (WMS) to acquire NDS from Norma Group (NOEJ.GR) in deal valued at $1.0B (€847.3M) in cash. Tomra Systems ASA (TOM.NO) acquires C&C Consolidated Holdings, LLC for ~$45M plus $15M in performance add-ons.

    • Looking ahead to tomorrow's EU econ-calendar, notable releases will include, amongst others, Germany Sep Ifo survey, Spain Aug PPI and Switzerland Sep economic sentiment index - ZEW.
