  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed mixed with UK and Germany near session highs and France lower. Basic resources, energy and utilities were the best performing sectors; construction, personal goods and chemicals lagged. Follows positive close on Tuesday.

    • Risk appetite softer following softer-than-expected economic data and comments from Fed's Powell. Focus also on geopolitics, as Trump met with Zelenskiy at US General Assembly and later declared Ukraine could retake all occupied territory, citing Russia's economic struggles. Kyiv welcomed remarks as "big shift," though no new US policy measures, such as additional sanctions, were announced.

    • German Chancellor Merz rejected criticism of social reforms. Press reports suggest EU-US trade talks to restart.

    • On the macro front, German IFO business climate index missed expectations as companies less satisfied with current conditions and increasingly pessimistic about the outlook. Comes as German economy contracted by (0.3%) in Q2 due to slowing US demand following tariff-related stockpiling. Elsewhere, Spain Aug PPI declines (1.5%) y/y vs consensus for a +0.1% increase and prior revised +0.4% from +0.3%. Also, Switzerland Sep ZEW Expectations came in below expectation (46.4) vs consensus (40.0) but improves from prior (53.8). Switzerland's KOF institute sees much lower growth in 2026 citing US Tariffs. In the UK, Ofgem reportedly to require all major suppliers to offer lower standing charge tariffs by the end of Jan-2026. UK pay settlements held at 3% in the three months to Aug as inflation remained elevated.

    • In corporate reporting, JD Sports Fashion (JD.LN) posted H1 whilst - from several CMDs taking place today - Iberdola (IBE.SM) now sees EBITDA to reach €18B by 2028, Metso Corp (METSO.FH) updated its strategy for 2026-30 and released new financial targets and CTP NV (CTPNV.NA) also confirmed its FY25 EPRA EPS target at its CMD.

    • On a busy syndicate desk, Asker Healthcare (ASKER.SS) holder Sjätte AP-fonden sold ~38M shares at SEK81/each, Exail Technologies (EXA.FP) places a €300M convertible bond, Envipco Holding (ENVI.NA) priced a NOK 630M private placement and Yellow Cake (YCA.LN) raised ~$125M (equivalent to £92.5M).
