Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures little changed after US indexes registered small weekly declines. Australian bonds touch stronger after Treasury yields rose slightly on Friday. FX markets steady after dollar capped off modest weekly advance against majors. Crude weaker amid reports OPEC+ weighing larger production hike for November. Gold coming off Friday's highs. Bitcoin unchanged near three-week low.
On trade front, Reuters sources noted White House weighing tariffs on foreign electronics based on percentage of number of chips they possess in bid to reduce reliance on foreign imports. Comes after media reports on Friday highlighted plans to push firms to produce same number of chips in US as their customers import from overseas producers. Trump's threat to impose 100% tariffs om pharma imports blunted by subsequent reports tariffs won't apply to countries with negotiated trade deals. Elsewhere, senior South Korean official said country unable to invest $350B with cash given insufficient FX reserves. US reportedly told India tariff relief contingent on reducing Russian crude purchases.
Quiet Monday ahead before busy macro stretch with official China PMIs (Tues) forecast to show manufacturing stuck in contraction while non-manufacturing activity stalled. Weekend data showed China industrial profits rebounded in August. RBA (Tues) expected to leave interest rates unchanged as economists cast doubt on November rate cut amid rising inflation. September BOJ Tankan (Wed) comes as markets dial up odds of an October rate hike. BOJ Governor Ueda will also speak Friday. US nonfarm payrolls (Fri) forecast to show another soft headline jobs result with market pricing in ~80% chance of October rate cut..
