  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Australia. Hong Kong tracking for small loss upon resumption of trade. Mainland China remains closed for Golden Week break. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Australian bonds rebounding after Treasury curve bull steepened in wake of soft JOLTS and private payrolls report that reinforced expectations for two more Fed rate cuts in 2025. Muted FX market price action. Crude steady near mid-August lows. Gold fluctuating around record high. Bitcoin trading near mid-August highs.

    • First day of widely of the widely telegraphed US government shutdown brought no clarity about a path to resolution. While Street again downplayed market and economic impact of shutdowns, which historically have been short, Trump's threat to conduct mass layoffs of federal employees emerging as potential overhang (OMB Director Vought said layoffs could come in next couple of days). Also concerns about implications of delayed data releases including Friday's nonfarm payrolls report.

    • Japan 10Y bond auction slated for today after prior month's 10Y sale drew strongest demand since Oct-2023. Comes as front-end JGBs have come under pressure this week with 2Y yield touching highest since mid-2008. Follows Tuesday's 2Y auction that saw weakest demand since 2009, which strategists attributed to October rate hike expectations. BOJ's JGB purchase operation schedule for Q4 has also attracted attention this week for JPY60B downsizing in 10-25Y segment.

    • Soybeans emerging as flashpoint in US-China trade talks after President Trump criticized Beijing for stopping purchases from America. Trump echoed Republican concerns expressed on Tuesday that Beijing doesn't intend to resume purchases of US agricultural purchases. Said he would raise issue with President Xi next month. Trump's post led to rally in soybean futures Wednesday. Press have also highlighted how Beijing ramping up soybean purchases from South American countries in bid to gain leverage in trade talks.

    • In macro developments, South Korea inflation rose by more than expected following one-off cuts to telecommunications fees that artificially depressed prior month's inflation print. In company news, Samsung (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS) signed deal with OpenAI for supply of chips and other equipment. BYD (1211.HK) September sales shrunk for first time since early 2024.
