Oct 06 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mostly positive start to Tuesday trade. Japan tracking for extension of Monday's rally. Hong Kong set for positive start following Monday weakness. ASX flat in initial trade. Mainland China remains closed for Golden Week holiday. S&P 500 futures touch lower afterhours. Australian bonds under pressure following backup in global yields. FX markets steady following yen sell-off in wake of Takaichi's win. Crude flat following positive session on smaller-than-feared OPEC+ production increase. Gold advancing to fresh record high. Bitcoin also at all-time high.

    • Global bond market weakness continued into overnight session with yields backing up on latest political developments in France and Japan. Upward pressure in long-dated JGB yields attributed in part to pickup to deficit/issuance implications from Takaichi's LDP victory and related stimulus speculation. Meanwhile, resignation of French PM Lecornu led to spike in French yields, driving premium over German debt to highest since January. Backup in French and Japan yields also drove more discussions about spillover to global bond markets.

    • Japan 30Y bond auction scheduled later today with the sale taking on added importance following backup in superlong yields in wake of Takaichi's victory. Japan 30Y yield near record high following Monday's curve steepening move. Strategists cautious following last week's soft 2Y and 10Y auctions, flagging risk of another weak result today amid pickup in concerns about supply and fiscal deterioration. MoF plans to reduce issuance of superlong bonds seen providing level of support after September's 30Y sale saw demand in-line with average.

    • AI optimism remains a driver of the upbeat narrative on US equity markets. SOX rose 3% Monday amid big AMD rally after group announced multibillion-dollar partnership with OpenAI (including warrants for a 10% stake in the chipmaker). OpenAI at center of a flurry of AI deal headlines over the past week, including with Nvidia, South Korean and Taiwan chip manufacturers. OpenAI's latest agreement also drove more discussions about AI bubble, circular transactions in AI and chip space and worries about AI capex ROI.
