Synopsis
European equity markets are set to open mixed/little changed. Last week, European markets closed higher with the Stoxx Europe 600 up +2.87% and hitting new record highs. A pickup in Fed easing expectations also seemed to be a supportive factor in Europe with no incremental European central bank developments. There were also fresh record highs for the UK FTSE 100 last week.
This morning, crude strengthening after OPEC+ production hike came in less than speculated. Gold firming to fresh record high. Bitcoin also logged new ATH.
Focus on French politics. President Emmanuel Macron has unveiled a new cabinet led by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu. Roland Lescure is now Minister of Economy and Finance Lescure, a Macron loyalist with a leftist background, will need to negotiate the 2026 budget in a divided parliament. France24 writes that the new government under Lecornu already facing criticism.
Asian equities mixed Monday. Most of the focus is on Japan with Nikkei staging big rally on Takaichi's LDP leadership victory. Hong Kong weighed down by big tech. Australia flat. Mainland China, South Korea and Taiwan closed public holiday.
European macro data releases out today include Germany Sep construction PMI, Spain Aug industrial production, Eurozone Aug retail sales, Sep Sentix investor confidence, Switzerland Sep unemployment rate, UK Sep construction PMI, Denmark Aug manufacturing production. Also todayn, Germany, Russia and UK Sep new car registrations.
In central banks, ECB's Guindos speech at 9:30CET at Diario Expansión: XVI Encuentro Financiero, ECB Conf on Monetary Policy 2025: bridging science and practice (through Tue) and ECB's Lane giving a speech at 10:00CET. ECB's Lagarde delivers a speech at 19:00CET before EP Committee (livestream) and BOE's Bailey at 18:30BST at Scotland's Global Investment Summit (through Tue).
At the Conservative Party conf, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Stride speech at 10:00BST.
This week sees Eurogroup meeting, French politicians continuing attempts to agree a budget for 2026, Germany Aug industrial production and Switzerland Sep unemployment rate as well as earnings/updates from the likes of Ferrexpo (FXPO.LN), LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (MC.FP), Mercedes-Benz Group (MBG.GR), OMV (OMV.AV), Repsol (REP.SM) and Tryg (TRYG.DC)
