Synopsis:
Asian markets set for negative start to Monday trade. Japan and Hong Kong futures fell sharply on Friday though risk sentiment has improved in pre-market trade with S&P 500 futures up 1% amid signs of US-China trade off-ramp. ASX opens with mild declines. Japan closed for public holiday. Australian bonds rallying with curve flattening. Dollar firming against Aussie and kiwi, steady elsewhere following Friday decline. Crude rebounding after dropping 4% on Friday. Gold and silver logging sharp gains. Bitcoin trading down towards two-week low.
US and China hinting at off-ramp amid latest spike in trade tensions On Friday Trump announced additional 100% tariffs on China following series of trade actions by Beijing involving rare earths export curbs, probe into QCOM, tightened customs checks of NVDA chips and port fees on US ships. Both sides criticized the other but voiced openness to negotiations. Trump also signaled that he chose 1-Nov for 100% tariff implementation date to allow space for talks, and he did not rule out meeting Xi at APEC summit.
