Synopsis:
European equity markets ended lower, with Spain and Finland +0.2%, joining the FTSE 100 among the leading outperformers, while Greece (1.5%), Denmark (1.0%) and Italy (0.9%) led the underperformers.
In political developments, in France, PM Lecornu announced suspension of France's 2023 pension reform to secure political survival. Move freezes retirement age increases until Jan-2028, meeting Socialist demands essential for government's survival. Recall also Lecornu renounced Article 49.3 only weeks ago. Two censure motions face Thursday's vote: one from La France Insoumise, the Greens, and Communists, and another from far-right Rassemblement National. All eyes rest on divided Socialists, which may submit independent no-confidence vote despite lack of internal cohesion as a third favor censure, a third oppose, and a third remain undecided(Reuters).
From a macroeconomic calendar perspective, UK labor market data showed increase in unemployment but wage growth continues to hold up. Final German CPI unchanged from flash. Meanwhile, latest German ZEW indicator recorded 39.3 reading in October versus consensus 40.5 and prior 37.3. but the assessment of the current situation remains very weak at -80.0 versus -75.0 forecast and prior -76.4. ZEW highlighted uncertainty related to implementation of the government's investment program and global headwinds. However, after a recent slump in exports to China, it pointed out that expectations for export-intensive sectors improved significantly in October. In terms of the broader Eurozone indicator, expectations deteriorated slightly to 22.7 versus prior 26.1 and the current situation reading at -31.8 versus -28.8, which was pinned on French political developments.
In corporate news, Michelin (ML.FP) cut its FY25 outlook and Publicis Groupe (PUB.FP) reported Q3 revenues. In Switzerland, Givaudan (GIVN.SW) posted strong Q3 sales and Bossard Holding (BOSN.SW) also released Q3 numbers. Out of the Nordics, LM Ericsson (ERIC.B.SS) Q3 adj EBITA reached SEK 15.80B, well above the consensus of SEK 9.16B, aided by a SEK 7.6B capital gain from selling iconectiv. Kesko (KESKOB.FH) and Alma Media (ALMA.FH) also updated investors with their most recent trading updates.
In the UK, BP (BP.LN) released its Q3 trading update and updated its Q3 guidance, with upstream production in Q3 now expected to be higher compared to the prior quarter. Mitie Group (MTO.LN) issued H1 Trading Update: revenue £2.7B vs year-ago £2.4B, +6.1% organic growth and announced new £100M share buyback program. Close Brothers Group (CBG.LN) increased its total provision to ~£300M in relation to proposed industry-wide redress scheme in respect of motor finance commissions. On M&A front, local Italian press wrote that MSC (Mediterranean Shipping) is assessing options for a potential takeover of EasyJet (EZJ.LN).
