Oct 15 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and muted start in Hong Kong. ASX up slightly in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat following tech- and small cap-led gains in Wednesday's session. Australian yield curve bear flattening following latest RBA remarks. Treasuries bit weaker overnight with some curve steepening. Dollar mildly weaker with yen back to early October highs. Crude rebounding from earlier lows. Gold making new record highs. Bitcoin down to late September lows.

    • US-China trade tensions remain elevated with White House officials again criticizing Beijing's latest export restrictions while pushing back on reports detailing Xi's view that Trump will back down first given his sensitivity to stockmarket. At same time, market looking toward some form of de-escalation with Bessent saying he still expects Trump to meet Xi at APEC summit this month. Bessent also flagged a longer tariff deadline extension beyond November if Beijing puts off its plan to tighten limits on rare earths.

    • In other trade developments, Trump claimed India PM Modi promised they will halt purchases of Russian crude over a period of time (no confirmation from Delhi though). South Korea trade adviser on Wednesday touted "meaningful progress" in talks with US over $350B investment pledge. Bessent added that Korea trade deal close and flagged further trade announcements when Trump visits Asia soon. China's new restrictions on rare earths will also be key topic at G7 finance ministers meeting later Thursday.

    • Hawkish-leaning comments from RBA with Governor Bullock suggesting policy less restrictive and Assistant Governor Kent highlighting signs of looser financial conditions. Assistant Governor Hunter's remarks on Wednesday warning about upside inflation risks also considered to have had a hawkish bent. With November rate cut odds having waned, RBA's latest remarks magnify spotlight on today's Australian jobs figures, which are forecast to show rebound in headline employment but an uptick in unemployment rate.
