  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed higher and near the session's best levels. Food/beverage, chemicals and autos were the best performing sectors; insurance, financial services and travel/leisure the main laggards. France CAC outperforms on political developments. Follows mixed performance on Wednesday.

    • French PM Lecornu narrowly survived no-confidence votes after announcing suspension of controversial pension reform law, a hallmark of President Macron's pro-business agenda.

    • Italy's government approved 2026 Draft Budgetary Plan, targeting budget deficit of 2.8% of GDP, down from 3.0% in 2025-already undershooting previous 3.3% target (FT, Reuters). PM Meloni's administration aims to reduce income tax rates from 35% to 33% for middle-income earners (€28,000-€50,000), costing €9B over three years.

    • On the macro data front, UK monthly activity data for August showed modest expansion in output. Monthly GDP increased 0.1% as expected versus prior 0.1% contraction revised down from 0% initially reported. Production grew by 0.4% in August 2025, whereas services showed no growth and construction fell by 0.3%. On a three-month basis, output up 0.3% versus prior 0.2%, with services growing 0.4%, production down 0.3% and construction up 0.3%. Meanwhile, latest trade data showed total goods and services deficit widened by £1.7B to £5.2B in the three months to August 2025 after exports fell by more than imports. Total export of goods fell 3.3% due to a 5.3% drop in exports to the EU, while non-EU exports down 1.5%.

    • Latest quarterly BoE credit condition survey highlighted ongoing caution among households and businesses. Appetite to borrow by households limited in Q3 with demand for secured credit for house purchases unchanged and no change anticipated in Q4, while overall demand for unsecured borrowing to remain flat into year end. Borrowing by small and large firms slightly firmer in Q3, while activity from medium sized businesses unchanged. Demand for corporate lending expected to pick up in Q4.

    • A busy session for earnings include from the DACHs region, ABB Limited (ABBN.SW) reports Q3 EPS $0.66 vs consensus $0.63 whilst Nestle (NESN.SW) reports 9M revenue CHF65.87B vs consensus CHF65.77B with FY organic sales growth is expected to improve compared to 2024. Merck (MRK.GR) released a CMD update saying it targets mid-term annual organic sales growth in the mid-single-digit percentage range and confirms 2025 guidance whilst Sartorius (SRT3.GR) reports 9M EPS €3.52 vs year-ago €3.01 and now expects FY Sales revenue growth of around +7% vs prior guidance around +6%. In France, Pernod Ricard (RI.FP) reports Q1 revenue €2.38B vs consensus €2.35B and continues to expect improving trends in FY26 organic net sales, skewed toward H2. VINCI (DG.FP) reports September airport passenger traffic +3.6% y/y and Sartorius Stedim Biotech (DIM.FP) whilst reports 9M EPS €2.24 vs year-ago €1.34 and raises FY guidance. In the Nordics, Nordea Bank (NDA.SE.SS) reports Q3 EPS €0.36 vs FactSet €0.33. CMD/events include Merck KGaA (MRK.GR), Cellectis (ALCLS.FP), Infineon (IFX.GR) OktoberTech Silicon Valley, Biotalys (BTLS.BB).
