Oct 23 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Hong Kong. ASX also off to positive start. S&P 500 futures steady afterhours following another tech-led advance on Thursday. Australian yield curve steepening after Treasuries weakened. FX markets steady with dollar nearing two-week high against yen. Crude off overnight highs following Thursday's geopolitical-driven rally. Gold stabilizing following big Tuesday selloff. Bitcoin continues to fluctuate.

    • White House confirmed President Trump to meet China's Xi at APEC summit on 30-Oct following days of speculation whether meeting will go ahead. While Trump has voiced optimism of a deal with Xi, meeting occurs against backdrop of elevated tensions amid reports US readying curbs on exports of critical software and a probe into China's noncompliance with 2020 trade deal. Fentanyl, rare earths and soybeans expected to feature in talks though meeting not expected to produce anything substantive beyond another truce and directives to continue negotiations.

    • Lot of press discussion about expected near-term impact on crude flows to China and India from US sanctions on Russian oil majors. Sources said state importers in both countries expected to halt purchases of seaborne Russian crude, at least in short-term. However, questions over sanctions compliance and effectiveness remain. Separately, EU announced ban on Russian LNG imports and imposed sanctions on firms including China refiners, prompting rebuke by Commerce Ministry spokesman.

    • Elsewhere, few surprises out of China's fourth plenum, which concluded Thursday with five-year plan focused on areas such as technological self-reliance and advanced manufacturing. Emphasized determination to meet 2025 growth target, repeating macro policies will be strengthened at appropriate time. Meanwhile, Reuters sources said Nexperia's China unit has resumed shipments of semiconductors to local distributors but with caveat that payments settled in yuan while Nexperia seeking alternative packaging partners outside China.
