  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan. ASX opens with slight decline. Hang Seng closed for public holiday. S&P 500 futures flat after US indexes finished mostly higher Tuesday. Bond markets quiet early after Treasury yields fell 1-2 bp. Dollar steady against majors following mild yen rebound. Gold extending earlier declines. Crude flat after losing 2% in cash session. Bitcoin retreating from early October highs.

    • More headlines about easing US-China trade tensions as market gets more comfortable with escalate to de-escalate narrative. Trade deal speculation trickling through ahead of Trump-Xi meeting on Thursday amid reports US open to reducing 20% fentanyl tariff by as much as 10% if China tightens controls on exports of fentanyl precursors. There is also speculation around export controls with China analysts saying Beijing decision to delay rare earths export curbs hinges on US rolling back recently announced BIS 'affiliate rule.'

    • President Trump in South Korea for talks with President Lee on Wednesday that are expected to focus on composition of $350B investment pledge (recall Seoul has warned direct investment poses financial market risk without an FX swap line). While Lee has downplayed expectations of an agreement being reached, US officials have voiced more optimism that a deal is close. Prospective deal on technology also expected to include cooperation in AI, quantum computing and 6G.

    • Markets coming into an eventful stretch on economic calendar. Fed widely expected to cut by 25 bp Wednesday while previews have also discussed potential for announcement of end to QT. Australia Q3 CPI forecast to show pickup in trimmed mean inflation that leaves y/y rate above RBA's forecasts and may weaken case for November rate cut. Thursday's BOJ meeting also coming into view amid expectations of a hold decision with rate hike expectations having been pushed back to December.

    • Big tech companies reporting results with SK Hynix (000660.KS) flagging HBM4 shipments from Q4 with full sales take-up expected in 2026.MSFT, GOOGL and META also reporting after US market close Wednesday. In other tech news, Bloomberg sources said NVDA CEO Jensen Huang planning to unveil AI chip supply contracts with major Korean firms including Samsung (005930.KS) and Hyundai (005380.KS). NVDA updates from GTC conference included partnership agreements and Blackwell/Rubin chips sales growth.
