StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.56%), Hang Seng Futures 0.00%, ASX SPI 200 (0.56%), S&P Futures (0.18%)

Oct 29 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Hong Kong, and negative start in Japan. ASX lower in initial trade. S&P 500 futures down slightly afterhours. Australian bond yields extending Wednesday's post-CPI backup. FX markets steady after dollar strengthened in aftermath of Fed decision and Chair Powell's press conference. Crude and gold pulling back from overnight highs. Bitcoin fluctuating near one-week low.

    • Presidents Trump and Xi to meet in Malaysia today at 11.00 local time. Contours of trade agreement have taken shape in recent days with deal expected to include fentanyl tariff relief for China (reports say rate could fall from 20% to as low as 10%), Beijing resuming US soybean purchases (reports noted China has resumed cargo bookings), and delaying plans to tighten rare earths export curbs. Deal may also involve some US relaxation of tech export controls, and discussions about US shipments of ~NVDA~ Blackwell chips.

    • Market processing hawkish initial takeaways from Fed meeting, which included a widely expected 25 bp rate cut and commentary from Chair Powell that a December rate cut is not a foregone conclusion, "far from it." Added that FOMC committee had strongly differing views about how to proceed in December. Focus on Powell's remarks saw Treasury yield curve bear flatten as market-implied odds of a December rate cut fell to ~57% from ~91% a day ago.

    • BOJ widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged (market pricing implies only a ~10% probability of a rate hike). Pickup in political uncertainty in aftermath of Sanae Takaichi's LDP leadership victory contributed to rate hike expectations being pushed back to December. Nikkei preview also highlighted board member concerns about tariff impacts on US economy amid data vacuum. BOJ vote count may draw attention with Tamura and Takata seen as highly likely to continue proposing a rate hike.

    • In other trade developments, US and South Korea finalized trade deal that will see Seoul invest $350B in US in return for tariff relief. Busy day of corporate activity with Asia earnings season in full swing, Samsung Electronics among companies slated to report. Meanwhile, Nikkei sources said Honda (~7267.JP~) suspended Mexico car production due to Nexperia chip shortages amid Dutch-China tensons.

    • US Mag 7 names reporting afterhours. ~MSFT~ -3.5% following Q1 results. Capex higher than forecast in July and flagged continued ramp into fiscal 2026. Azure revenue growth better than expected, but demand still outstripping capacity. ~GOOGL~ +6% following Q3 results. Cloud revenue better-than-expected amid jump in Gemini MAUs, prompting upgrade to FY capex guidance. Search and YouTube revenue also beat. ~META~ -7.5% following Q3 results. Flagged significant growth in FY expenses and lifted bottom end of prior 2025 capex guidance range.
