Synopsis:
Asian market set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening decline in Japan, flat start in Hong Kong. ASX down slightly in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Australian bounds rebounding following post-RBA weakness. Treasuries firmed Tuesday with yields lower across the curve. Dollar strengthened towards late May highs with yen weakness getting more attention. Crude and gold adding to overnight declines. Bitcoin steady after sliding below $100K for first time since June.
Negative leads for Asian markets from overnight retreat on Wall Street, where weakness was tabbed to pickup in valuation concerns following comments from Wall Street CEOs at Hong Kong summit about potential for near-term pullback. Cautious sentiment also tied continued scrutiny on AI from escalation in hyperscaler capex guidance, debt-fueled expansion plans, and concentration risks underlined by extent to which handful of tech giants driving bulk of market gains. However, it was also noted such concerns have been around for with pullbacks often proving shallow amid the prevailing bullish narrative.
US tech firms reporting afterhours. SMCI -8 afterhours after downgrading Q1 guidance, citing competitive tensions and margin pressures. AMD -4% afterhours after Q4 revenue guidance topped consensus but fell short of loftiest projections. In other developments, New Zealand unemployment rate rose to nine-year high, reinforcing expectations of an RBNZ rate cut this month. Yen's latest fall drew strongest warning from Finance Minister Katayama since she assumed her role last month. Still some uncertainty over Nexperia chip shipments from China despite trade truce.
