Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures signaling small opening gain in Japan and mild opening decline in Hong Kong. ASX higher in initial trade. S&P 500 futures strengthening amid hopes for an end to government shutdown. Australian bond yields up 1-2 bp after Treasury curve steepened Friday. FX price action muted with dollar little changed on major crosses. Crude and gold little changed. Bitcoin tracking towards one-week high.
In weekend developments, China consumer prices unexpectedly rose and factory-gate deflation moderated. US media reporting enough Democrats leaning towards supporting short-term funding bill to reopen government. China confirmed it has lifted ban on exports of finished Nexperia chips. Also suspended ban on exports of dual-use materials to US. TSMC's annual sports day event over weekend with NVDA CEO Jensen Huang bullish on Blackwell demand, having asked TSMC CEO to increase wafer supply.
Main economic event this week will be October round of China activity data, forecast to show weakness in fixed asset investment, retail sales, industrial production and housing metrics. Credit data also tentatively slated for release this week. BOJ Summary of Opinions (Mon) to shed light on policymaker views after two dissented in support of rate hike last month. Australia employment data (Thurs) expected to reinforce RBA assessment of some labor market tightness. Japan CGPI, South Korea unemployment rate and India CPI also due out.
