Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signalling opening gain in Japan and small decline in Hong Kong (Nasdaq Golden Dragon index closed up 2%). ASX opens with mild gain. S&P 500 futures flat after index logged best session in a month. Australian bond yields down slightly following Monday's rate backup. FX markets steady with dollar index trading in tight range. Crude and gold little changed after strengthening alongside equities. Bitcoin hovering at one-week high.
AI recovery the main market driver overnight with Nasdaq logging best day since late May and SOX index up 3%. Rebound follows worst week for tech stocks since April amid discussions involving stretched valuations, index concentration and debt-fueled capex plans. Nothing specific behind Monday's bounce, which featured more dip buying talk, bullish earnings outlook and pushback against capex concerns. Favorable sentiment surrounding Nvidia into earnings next week and cleaner positioning also mentioned.
Movement towards ending US government shutdown contributed to risk sentiment rebound with wires reporting Senate bill to reopen government on track to pass Monday night after White House gave its backing. House approval may come Wednesday with government potentially reopening by weekend. Market welcoming developments with reopening paving way for release of delayed data that may shape December rate cut expectations. Futures pricing in ~60% chance of December rate cut, and Fed views are mixed with some backing further easing while others counselling caution.
