Synopsis:
European equity markets closed mostly lower Thursday, with the Stoxx Europe 600 at session lows. Follows three strong positive closes, with Stoxx Europe 600 up over 2% this week to a fresh all-time high.
US equities lower with S&P down (1.3%). Another session of volatile AI sentiment with a number of moving pieces in focus. Meanwhile, Trump signed into law stopgap funding bill to reopen US government. However, unlikely to resolve data vacuum, which remains an issue from Fed policy perspective with White House saying October CPI, jobs data likely won't be released due to shutdown. While resumption of Fed easing has been a component of the bullish narrative, Fed policymakers still divided on policy path.
On the European macro front, focus initially on data. UK prelim Q3 GDP disappointed at 0.1% versus 0.3% prior and 0.2% expected by BoE. Industrial production also missed, at (2.0%) m/m versus (0.2%) expected. Construction output slightly higher. Latest UK house price balance missed forecasts. Over 60 groups urged Chancellor Reeves to prioritize reducing electricity bill charges over VAT cuts. Eurozone industral output ECB bulletin highlighted modest growth and trade risks.Bundesbank said German economy remains mired in weakness. In France, lawmakers voted to suspend President Macron's contested pension reform, raising further concerns over fiscal sustainability. Germany's economic council cut 2026 GDP forecast criticizing Merz' infrastructure fund.
Busy day for earnings/updates in Europe with Insurance sector in focus; positive reactions for the likes of Generali (G.IM), Talanx (TLX.GR) and Aegon (AGN.NA), while Aviva (AV.LN) shares fell on back of its trading update / strategic update on Direct Line / new financial targets. Financial Services under pressure, with the super sector sliding (2.3%). 3i (III.LN) shares dived (17%) on back of H1 results, which shows that the implied Oct LFLs for Action were flattish. Moreover, 3i said softening trading conditions in France could pull Action's LFL sales growth for 2025 below the 6.1% guidance Action gave in March 2025. Azimut (AZM.IM) shares slumped, prompting CEO to make a statement saying he is to increase holding in the company. Industrials another European sector laggard today on back of Siemens (SIE.GR) (9%) mixed results and downbeat 2026 guidance
