Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures signaling muted start in Japan and mild initial declines in Hong Kong. ASX down in early trade. S&P 500 futures seeing slight gain following week characterized by unwind of momentum trades. Australian bonds weakening after Treasury yields extended move higher. Dollar little changed on major crosses. Crude retreating from Friday's highs. Gold edging up. Bitcoin down to late April lows.
In weekend developments, US and China yet to formalize rare earths agreement with Treasury Secretary Bessent hopeful of deal by Thanksgiving. Trump signed executive order lowering tariffs on beef, coffee, other agricultural products. FT cited White House memo alleging Alibaba (~9988.HK~) providing support to Chinese military. Major South Korean firms pledged ~$550B domestic investment over five years targeting AI R&D and other areas. China-Japan tensions notching higher with Beijing urging citizens to avoid travel and study in Japan.
Markets bracing for US data dump this week including September nonfarm payrolls data (Thurs). FOMC minutes (Wed) will provide more detail on October rate cut decision. Japan Q3 GDP (Mon) forecast to show deepest contraction in two years with tariffs hitting exports. Japan CPI (Fri) comes after Tokyo core inflation accelerated by more than expected.
