Dec 01 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan following Monday selloff on Ueda's hawkish remarks. Hang Seng futures also trading higher while ASX gaining in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat following somewhat risk-off Monday session. Australian bond yields extending recent move higher, in-line with global bond markets. FX markets steady with yen ending notably higher. Crude hovering near earlier highs. Gold little changed. Bitcoin stabilizing following 6% selloff.

    • BOJ Governor Ueda's speech continues to reverberate after multiple economists brought forward rate hike calls to December from January. Speech also exerted more pressure on JGBs with yield curve steepening (20Y hit record). Yen also extended rebound to highest against dollar in almost two weeks, as hawkish BOJ expectations contributed to further narrowing of US-Japan yield gap since mid-November. Attention moves to today's JGB 10Y auction in latest test of investor appetite after the benchmark yield rose to its highest since 2008.

    • Crypto volatility the other big market story with Bitcoin selloff attributed in part to hawkish takeaways from Ueda's speech, and losses magnified by unwinding of leveraged positions. Elsewhere, US macro backdrop clouded by soft US ISM manufacturing print and elevated price component, and upbeat headlines regarding Black Friday trends, leaving markets pricing in ~85% chance of December Fed rate cut.

    • In latest AI news, DeepSeek released new versions of existing experimental AI models in bid to match aspects of GPT-5 and Gemini 3. OpenAI's decision to acquire stake in Thrive Holdings added to circularity concerns with Thrive Capital also an investor in OpenAI.
