Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan and Hong Kong. Flat start in Australia. S&P 500 futures steady afterhours. Australian bonds recovering following big yield backup this week. Comes after Treasury curve flattened Thursday following sharp drop in initial claims. FX markets steady after dollar lost ground against yen. Crude flat after rising 1%. Gold little changed. Bitcoin pulled back from two-week high.
Not much in way of directional drivers following lackluster night in US, where there is a semblance of waiting game ahead of next week's FOMC meeting. Lot of moving pieces surrounding AI with recent newsflow featuring supply deals, chip production developments, M&A/IPO activity and mixed earnings takeaways. Across Asia, focus has been on market fallout from hawkish BOJ developments that have firmed expectations of a December rate hike. Rising inflation expectations, and Japan fiscal stimulus scrutiny has also fueled rise in JGB yields.
RBI expected to cut repo rate by 25 bp at Friday's meeting. Rate cut expectations were crystalized by October inflation falling to record low (albeit influenced by food deflation, base year effects). Governor Malhotra in November also noted that data since October meeting left scope to cut rates further. Prospects for rate cut since then have been clouded by much stronger-than-expected Q3 GDP growth, and rupee's slide to record low, prompting suggestions central bank nearing end of easing cycle.
