Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening gain in Japan and muted start in Hong Kong. Small initial decline in Australia. S&P 500 futures flat after US indexes posted modest weekly gain, led by tech. Australian bonds weakening after Treasury yields rose along the curve on Friday. FX markets steady after dollar capped negative week (yen back to mid-Nov highs). Crude unchanged while gold edging lower. Bitcoin flat after retreating over weekend.
Busy week coming up, headlined by an expected Fed rate cut (Wed). RBA, BOC and SNB all expected to hold. Flurry of economic data with Japan final Q3 GDP (Mon) forecast to show downward revision on preliminary contraction. China trade, lending and inflation data, and Australian employment among other main data releases. AI remains in focus with AVGO and ORCL reporting earnings while OpenAI may also release GPT 5.2 this week following hype surrounding Gemini 3.
In weekend headlines, top US and Chinese officials held trade talks with USTR Greer saying Beijing complying with terms of trade agreement. US trade officials also head to India for trade talks this week. French President Macron threatened tariffs against China over trade imbalance. China-Japan tensions festering after China fighter jet locked radar at Japanese aircraft. Bloomberg sources said SoftBank (9984.JP) in talks to acquire PE data center investor, DigitalBridge.
