StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.48%, Hang Seng Futures +0.34%, ASX SPI 200 +0.89%, S&P Futures (0.14%)

Dec 10 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised to open broadly higher Thursday. Futures in Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Australia all advanced. Japan ADRs were almost all higher, Nasdaq Golden Dragon China index also climbed. US contracts sustaining broad-based overnight gains with Dow index up 1% and benchmarks closing a bit off best levels. Tech leads were positive with SOX index up 1.29% and US Big Tech mostly higher. Treasuries firmed with curve steepening. Dollar index was off 0.6%. Gold finished down 0.3%. Bitcoin futures were up 0.4%. WTI crude ended up 0.4%, near best levels following US seizure of Venezuelan tanker.

    • Fed cut rates by 25 bp as expected while details stimulated a lot of discussion. Vote saw three dissenters for the first time since 2019 (two for hold, one for 50 bp cut). Dot plot continued to signal one more cut in 2026, though was the net result of seven in favor of staying on hold vs eight looking for at least two moves. Markets still pricing in two moves. Forward guidance was discounted to some extent given a new Fed chair will be appointed next year. Powell said Fed sees policy rate now within the broad range of neutral estimates and well positioned to see how economy evolves. 2026 GDP median forecast revised up while inflation shaved slightly. Yet, confidence level somewhat lower given lack of data points due to the government shutdown. Takeaways framed the results as somewhat hawkish and market friendly.

    • Asia themes light. Yesterday's China inflation data had little impact on the persistent deflation narrative. Markets awaiting CEWC for more substantive economic guidance after recent policy rhetoric has been largely qualitative while continuing to express confidence in achieving 2025 goals. IMF's annual China review revised up 2025 GDP growth forecast to 5.0% while pointing out significant imbalances. Press narrative continues to play up China's YTD trade surplus topping $1T for the first time. Attention in Japan building up to an anticipated BOJ rate hike next week currently ~90% priced in. With markets looking more to the trajectory next year and BOJ officials mulling disclosure of more specific neutral rate guidance, bulk of forecasters see terminal rate in the 1.00-1.50% range.
