Dec 23 ,2025
Synopsis:
The Asia Market Preview will not be published on 25-Dec. It will return on 26-Dec.
Asian markets set for positive start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling small initial gains in Japan and Hong Kong. Australia lower in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Australian bonds slightly weaker after Treasury curve flattened in wake of strong US GDP. FX markets steady after yen recouped week-to-date loss against dollar. Gold hovering near record high. Crude unchanged. Bitcoin range bound.
Positive leads for Asian markets from US, where S&P hit a new record high and big tech saw good gains. Most of the focus was on better-than-expected US Q3 GDP that furthered narrative of a 'goldilocks economy'. Data drove somewhat hawkish repricing though futures still pricing in ~41 bp of Fed rate cuts next year. More broadly, stocks remain on a positive trajectory going into seasonally strong period (Santa rally), though one likely to characterized by thin volumes.
US to delay additional tariffs on imports of legacy China chips until at least mid-2027 following S301 investigation launched in Dec-2024. USTR said China's targeting of semiconductor industry is unreasonable and burdens US commerce, while harming foreign competitors by exploiting dependencies. Decision to delay tariffs seen as latest attempt by Trump administration to prevent flare-up of tensions following trade truce struck in October that led US to suspend certain tech export curbs and China to delay ease rare earths export controls.
In macro developments, South Korea consumer confidence eased from eight-year high in December amid inflation uptick and FX volatility. RBI Governor Malhotra repeated India in for long period of low rates with policy in neutral phase amid benign inflation backdrop. Taiwan export order growth rose to almost five-year high in November amid ongoing strong demand for AI semiconductors. On corporate front, China Vanke (2202.HK) credit rating downgraded to 'selective default' by S&P after creditors granted only short-term extension of bond repayment.
