  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets ended mostly higher. France softer. Follows mild losses on Monday with activity slowing in a holiday shortened week. Gauge of Eurozone equity volatility at its lowest in a year. Healthcare, basic resources and utilities best performers, while travel/leisure, autos, media and food/beverage the main laggards.

    • European investors focusing on underlying resilience in macro backdrop, improved earnings outlook and extended pause in leading European central bank rate cut cycles. ECB Executive board member Schnabel offered clarification on her recent endorsement of market rate hike pricing. Said does not expect hikes in foreseeable future. Fits in with recent sell-side economist surveys pointing to likelihood of unchanged policy until late 2027.

    • Little on the macro data calendar. EU new car registrations saw fifth month of gains. Spanish final Q3 GDP in line with prelim while Nov PPI weaker at (2.5%) y/y vs consensus +0.9%. UK Lloyds business barometer ends year on a higher note. Latest BCC survey showed UK-EU trade deal has failed to help businesses expand.

    • Very limited corporate news flow. Pets At Home Group Plc (PETS.LN) appoints James Bailey as new CEO, effective 30-Mar-26. AB Science (AB.FP) shares higher following granting of US patent for use of masitinib for treatment of sickle cell disease, expiring in Nov-40. Further in healthcare, IRLAB Therapeutics (IRLAB.A.SS) shares also up after group received regulatory and ethical approvals for Phase Ib study of IRL757 in Parkinson's Disease.

    • In M&A headlines, in an interview, Nestle (NESN.SW) CEO comments L'Oreal (OR.FP) stake is a financial investment; evaluates it regularly with the board. Hafnia (HAFNI.NO) completes acquisition of 13.97% of TORM (TRMD.A.DC) from Oaktree. Arkema (AKE.FP) announces a proposed divestment of part of the Coating Solutions segment. Further in France, Elis (ELIS.FP) announces acquisition of Adrett in Germany.

    • Looking ahead to tomorrow's EU econ-calendar, the only notable release is the Netherlands Q3 final GDP. Of note, Austria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland will be fully closed while Belgium, France, Ireland, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, UK will see a early close.
