Dec 29 ,2026
Synopsis:
Asian markets set for muted start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling flat open in Japan and Hong Kong. Australia up slightly in initial trade. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds strengthening after Treasury yields reversed lower. Dollar steady against other currencies. Gold stabilizing following volatile Monday session while platinum extending losses. Crude pulling back following earlier rally. Bitcoin struggling for direction.
Commodity volatility the big story on markets with precious metals ending sharply lower Monday - silver recording biggest decline since 2021. Losses more pronounced among industrial metals with platinum ending down 14%. Follows massive run-up in metals to record highs, attributed to factors such as geopolitical tensions, Fed rate cut expectations, and weak dollar. However, there was also sense thin volumes and speculative activity magnified moves. On Monday CME moved to raise margin requirements for gold, silver and other metals.
Negative leads for Asian indexes from Monday's tech-led pullback in US, where NVDA was notable Mag 7 decliner. Nothing specific behind pullback with trading activity and newsflow subdued during final week of 2025. Preceding rally a function of very favorable seasonality (Santa rally), while positive AI sentiment has driven outperformance of tech-heavy benchmarks in Korea and Taiwan (memory producers the clear standouts). There remain absence of macro catalysts with FOMC minutes (Wed) and China PMIs (Wed) the week's highlights.
