    • European equity markets are set for a mostly higher open on the first trading day of 2026. Switzerland remains closed for Berchtold's Day. Asia equities higher with strong gains in Hong Kong, Seoul and Taipei as AI and related stocks surge again. Hang Seng sentiment further supported by successful listing of Shanghai Biren Technology. India and Southeast Asia benchmarks also higher. Japan, mainland China and Thailand remained closed. US futures higher.

    • FT reports US has slashed planned additional Italian pasta tariffs from up to 92% to a range of between 2-14%. In the UK, rail unions call for an end to outsourcing jobs such as cleaning, security and catering so profits could be reinvested in the railway. FT also reports up to 40% of luxury goods were sold at a discount in 2025 after years of price rises.

Sky News reports Spire Healthcare Group (SPI.LN) asked suitors to indicate interest by 20-Jan.
