Synopsis:
Asia equities poised for a mixed open Wednesday. Futures in Japan and Hong Kong traded lower while Australia and South Korea higher. Japan ADRs skewed to gains while Golden Dragon China index fell 0.78%. Areas of weakness contrasted with strength in US benchmarks that closed near best levels. Tech leads were positive with SOX index up a sharp 2.75% with big tech mostly firmer outside of Mag 7. US Treasuries were weaker across the curve with yields up ~1-2 bp. Dollar index up 0.3%. Gold settled up 1.0%. Silver ended up 5.7% at a fresh record high. Bitcoin futures down 1.9% after Monday's strong gains. WTI crude settled down 2.0%.
Bullish sentiment remains the main theme, kicking off a strong start to the year especially in Asia. AI optimism most frequently cited as a key driver. Market attention on Venezuela increasingly distilling into crude oil implications (while also compounding broader geopolitical risks) though still a lot of unclarity about the outlook for supply. Macro suffered somewhat of a setback on a slight miss in final US services PMI. However, 'bad news is good news' dynamic via Fed rate cut expectations providing net positive near term implications. US to see more notable economic indicators this week and labor market data still look to be the key risk events this week. That aside, consensus polls continue to show bullish skew in 2026 stock market projections.
Latest regional developments revolved around China. Commerce Ministry banned export of dual-use items to Japan that can be used for military purposes. Specifically cited Prime Minister Takaichi's remarks on Taiwan that constituted a "serious violation of the one-China principle." Foreign Ministry also noted concerns about Japan's revisions to its security policy and bolstering of defense capabilities that Beijing sees as a "remilitarization." Direct impacts so far unclear though reinforces hints in Chinese media that authorities were considering restrictions on rare earth exports to Japan. Elsewhere, local press reported China aims to grow AI into a trillion-yuan industry within two years under a new action plan, though summary was descriptive with no mention of funding. PBOC concluded its annual work conference Tuesday and reaffirmed a moderately loose policy stance for 2026, continuing to mention RRR and policy rate cuts that usually portends follow through at some point. Also reiterated stable yuan policy.
