Synopsis:
European indices ended mostly lower - UK underperforms after notable outperformance in prior session - whilst Germany, Italy are exceptions to the softer trend. Follows broad strength on Tuesday. Real estate, industrials and constructions best performers; energy, personal/household goods, insurance and banks lag.
In geopolitics, EU attention on White House announcement that Trump discussing options to acquire Greenland. Follows statement by European leaders urging US to respect sovereignty of island. Added Artic security a top priority for Nato. Meanwhile, UK and France agree to deploy forces in Ukraine in the event of a peace deal amid reports US committed to supporting multinational Ukraine defense force if Russia were to attack again and would lead efforts in monitoring a ceasefire. Recall that Russia has pushed back against idea of foreign troop deployment in the country.
Elsewhere, Bloomberg cited French Finance Minister Lescure, who said the 2026 deficit could exceed 5.4% after parliament failed to adopt a 2026 budget bill late last year. Highlighted that it needs to find a way to bring deficit below 5%.
On the macro front, Eurozone inflation eases back to ECB's 2% target versus prior 2.1% in December, in line with expectations. Core CPI at 2.3% versus 2.4% forecast and prior 2.4%, while services prices at 3.4% versus 3.5% in November. Softer Eurozone reading came after easing in inflation rates in Germany, France and Spain, while Italy's reading slightly firmer at 1.2% versus 1.1%. Supports ECB's steady hand. Market expects ECB to leave policy unchanged throughout 2026 and anticipates rate hike in March 2027 the earliest. German labor market deteriorates in December and retail sales unexpectedly dips in late 2025. French consumer confidence edges up as expected. Construction PMIs remain weak in euro area and UK.
In corporate news, Lerøy Seafood Group (LSEG.NO) and Salmar (SALM.NO) released Q4 harvest volumes, whilst Nordnet (SAVE.SS) and Avanza Bank Holding (AZA.SS) issued December statistics. In Germany, Redcare Pharmacy (RDC.GR) reported preliminary Q4 numbers.
In M&A, Reuters reported that Thyssenkrupp and Jindal Steel are considering several options for the sale of TKSE, with one of the options being Jindal taking a majority stake, likely 60%, in TKSE, and the remaining 40% later in one or two tranches. In France, Covivio (COV.FP) and Blue Owl Capital announce a €503M strategic partnership to share Thales (HO.FP) sites in Vélizy.
Looking ahead to tomorrow's EU econ-calendar, notable releases will include, amongst others, Germany Nov factory orders, industrial production, France Nov trade balance, Italy Nov unemployment rate, Eurozone Dec economic sentiment indicator, Nov PPI, unemployment rate, Switzerland Dec CPI and UK Dec house price index - Halifax.
