  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets ended the session mixed to higher, the STOXX Europe 600 trading in a narrow range in slightly negative territory, the STOXX Europe 50 doing similar, though briefly flirted with positive territory on a couple of occasions.

    • With many country benchmarks seeing limited moves in either direction, and shares ending towards the lower end of the day's range, Netherlands (1.4%) and Finland (1.3%) the outliers to the downsides, with Greece +1.9% the outlier to the upside

    • Defense shares supported by Trump call for a $1.5T FY27 Defense Budget to fund a Dream Military

    • SNB released minutes of last MPC meeting and ECB's de Guindos was in fireside chat at Vocento's 2nd Edition of Next Spain Global. ECB released results of latest consumer expectations survey

    • Macro data saw better than expected Germany Nov factory orders and Italy Nov unemployment rate. Switzerland Dec CPI and France Nov trade balance were generally inline, whilst Eurozone Dec economic sentiment slips modestly and UK's Dec house price index from the Halifax, part of Lloyds Banking Group, the UK's largest mortgage lender, ended 2025 on a weak footing, the lender expecting house prices to rise between +1-3% in 2026

    • In politics, respective leaders took part in the first EU-Jordan summit, joint statement and Chancellor Merz met with Lithuanian President Nausėda on the sidelines of the CSU's closed-door meeting at Seeon Abbey. Norway's PM Støre made a statement in parliament on the Government's political priorities - plan for Norway, which was followed by a debate that is ongoing, and later Støre participated in a panel discussion at the New Year's seminar of Norsk Hydro.

    • The Norwegian Offshore Directorate presented a summary of activity on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS) over the past year. Both production and investments were very high in 2025. Oil production (106M standard cubic metres is the highest since 2009. Production from the NCS is nearly equally distributed between oil and gas. A total of 120B standard cubic metres was sold, which represents a minor reduction from the record-breaking year of 2024. Norwegian gas accounts for ~30% of EU gas consumption, and Norway is Europe's largest supplier after cutting off Russian gas

    • In addition to the news that Galp Energia and Moeve are negotiating to combine downstream activities in the Iberian Peninsula, other M&A news flow that saw more modest share price responses included Mutares (MUX.GR) agrees to acquire the Engineering Thermoplastics Business in the Americas and Europe of SABIC for an $450M (enterprise value) and to sell Kalzip to Tremco CPG for an undisclosed sum, CVC Capital Partners (CVC.NA) via DIF agrees to acquire iPark from Elliott Investment Management for an undisclosed sum and reportedly, Millicom International Cellular reportedly considering buying Telefonica's (TEF.SM) Chilean unit.

    • Updates from UK retailers Greggs (GRG.LN), Marks & Spencer Group (MKS.LN), Tesco (TSCO.LN) as well as Primark, part of Associated British Foods (ABF.LN) topped the earnings releases, that also saw Sodexo (SW.FP) report Q1 revenue, Dassault Aviation (AM.FP) raise FY sales guidance to over €7.00B vs prior guidance €6.50B, Sligro Food Group (SLIGR.NA) report prelim FY revenue €2.67B vs FactSet €2.68B [4 est, €2.65-2.71B] and Jungfraubahn Holding (JFN.SW) reported 2025 visitor numbers and announced new financial targets at its Investor Day.
