  • Synopsis:

    • European equities closed mostly higher and near the best levels of the session with France, Denmark and Finland edging lower. Basic resources, construction & materials and banks were the best performing sectors whilst travel & leisure, autos and utilities lagged. Follows strong performance last week, with fresh record levels across the region.

    • Markets digesting escalation in US-Fed tensions intensified as federal prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into Fed Chair Powell over his congressional testimony on the central bank's headquarters renovation, which Powell described in a video statement as a pretext for Trump's pressure to cut rates and undermine independence; comes after Trump in December voiced his displeasure at Powell and expressed a desire to fire him.

    • Iran the focus of latest geopolitical headlines after President Trump confirmed US military weighing "strong options" for Tehran as regime intensifies crackdown against large-sale demonstrations. Iran threatened to retaliate against any strike, putting American bases, commercial interest and as well as Israel in its crosshairs. EU ready for new sanctions. Oil spiked following initial headlines before erasing gains as market reassesses whether renewed hostilities would directly impact crude flows from Strait of Hormuz. On Greenland, US Secretary of State Rubio set to meet Danish and Greenlandic ministers on Wednesday to discuss the island's future. European leaders, including those from Denmark, France, Germany, and the UK, have united in support of Denmark and Greenland against renewed US threats

    • In Europe, EZ Sentix investor confidence improved to (1.8) versus (5.0) expected and (6.2) prior. Elsewhere, EU member states approved signature of EU-Mercosur trade agreement on 9-Jan, with von der Leyen to sign deal on 17-Jan. EU and China reahced deal on EV tariffs. ECB's Muller reiterated rates in right place. In the UK, KPMG/REC Dec 2025 Report on Jobs reinforced picture of labor market deterioration.

    • On a reporting calendar that is steadily getting busier, BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI.NA) shares are rallying this morning after posting Q4 numbers whilst - in the UK - Plus500 (PLUS.LN) and IQE FY (IQE.LN) released trading updates; elsewhere, Viridien (VIRI.FP), Cosmo Pharmaceuticals (COPN.SW) and Azimut Holding (AZM.IM) posted prelim numbers, with the latter also guiding FY26. Of note, Barclays (BARC.LN) shares are trading trading lower after Trump called for a one-year 10% cap on credit card interest rates.

    • In M&A news, according to local French press, Eli Lilly (LLY) is reportedly ready to invest €15.0B to acquire Abivax (ABVX.FP), with shares of the latter up +30% at the open; in Italy, local daily Il Messaggero wrote that the Pirelli (PIRC.IM) shareholder pact between Camfin and Sinochem will be dissolved soon. In management news, a slew of CEO changes were announced this morning, including Heineken (HEIA.NA), British Land Co. (BLND.LN) and DFDS (DFDS.DC).
