StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.39%, Hang Seng Futures +0.21%, ASX SPI 200 +0.08%, S&P Futures (0.04%)

Jan 13 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Hong Kong. Australia also higher in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Australian and New Zealand bonds weakening. Comes after Treasuries firmed with some curve steepening. FX markets steady after yen extended losses against dollar. Crude little changed following Tuesday rally on latest Iran headlines. Gold hovering near record high. Bitcoin extending rally to two-month high.

    • Nikkei sources signaled PM Takaichi will today inform LDP officials about her intention to trigger snap election that may pave way for 8-Feb vote. Election speculation has put renewed momentum behind 'Takaichi trade' with fiscal expansion theme driving Japan stocks to record highs while deficit concerns heaping pressure on JGBs. Yen also fell to 18-month low against dollar, prompting more verbal warnings from Finance Minister Katayama as currency pair nears psychological 160 level.

    • China trade data forecast to show export growth slowed to 3.0% in December from 5.9% a month earlier according to Reuters poll, partly reflecting high base year with Dec-2024 exports up 11% as firms pulled forward orders ahead of Trump's inauguration. Import growth forecast to have weakened to 0.9% from 1.9%, corresponding with other economic metrics indicative of soft domestic demand. Separately, Reuters Tankan showed Japan manufacturer sentiment fell to lowest in six months, though non-manufacturer confidence remains elevated.

    • Crude now at highest since late Oct-2025 as markets eye developments in Middle East and potential for US intervention in Iran. On Tuesday President Trump broke off talks with Tehran and urged demonstrations to continue, saying "help is on the way" and urging Americans to leave Iran immediately. Press sources say Trump presented with range of options that include military strikes, cyberattacks, sanctions or other ways of supporting protestors. Trump also threatened 25% tariffs on countries doing business with Iran, ostensibly aimed at China.

    • In overnight developments, cooler-than-expected US December CPI was a non-event with data considered noisy and market not pricing in another rate cut until mid-2026. Markets continue to look past DOJ probe into Chair Powell with press highlighting GOP pushback and Fed defiance. US formally approved NVDA H200 chip exports to China but sources told The Information Beijing will only allow purchases under special circumstances. US earnings season off to cautious start with JPM leading banks lower after investment banking fees missed.
