Jan 14 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan and Hong Kong. Australian stocks higher in initial trade. US contracts lower after overnight price action characterized by rotational flows with May 7 under pressure and small caps extending performance. Australian bonds firming, taking cues from earlier Treasury curve flattening. FX markets steady after yen regained ground following latest verbal intervention. Korean won also stronger after Treasury Secretary Bessent warned against excessive depreciation. Oil extending pullback after Trump tempered Iran rhetoric. Gold also edging lower. Bitcoin hit fresh two-month high.

    • Oil under pressure after President Trump signaled military intervention less likely by claiming he received assurances Iranian killing of protestors has stopped. Trump's warnings about taking strong action had raised speculation of strikes against Iran, contributing to geopolitical risk premium built into oil. However, press sources recently highlighted pushback by Trump allies, US officials and Gulf allies against idea of military action, reflecting concerns about wider instability and risk of Iranian retaliation.

    • Japan election speculation continues with Nikkei top story noting PM Takaichi informed senior executives of LDP executives and JIP Wednesday of her intention to dissolve lower house early in Diet session, which convenes 23-Jan, paving way for potential 8-Feb vote at earliest. 'Takaichi trade' in effect this past week with stocks hitting record highs and JGBs under pressure. Yen weakness prompted more verbal warnings from Finance Minister Katayama on Wednesday, stating government will respond to excessive moves.

    • BOK expected to keep policy rate unchanged at 2.50% at Thursday's meeting. Easing expectations have been dialed back after central bank put greater priority on managing financial stability risks from surging house prices and won depreciation. Fits with consensus view BOK easing cycle is over after December's board member vote count showed even fewer anticipate rate cut in next three months. Guidance was also tweaked to remove explicit reference to 'maintaining a rate cut stance.'

    • Following outcome of S232 probe, President Trump signed executive order adjusting imports of critical minerals but stopped short of imposing tariffs. Order left open possibility of future tariffs, minimum import prices or import restrictions. Trump also signed executive order imposing 25% tariffs on certain advanced semiconductors such as NVDA H200 and AMD MI325X, before final shipment to China. Order formalizes Trump's earlier decision requiring government to collect 25% cut of chip sales to China.
