  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Hong Kong while Japan futures ended slightly lower. ASX flat in initial trade. Australian bonds weakening after Treasuries curve bear flattened. FX markets steady with yen and Korean won stabilizing following run of declines. Crude flat following earlier sell-off after Trump dialed back hawkish Iran rhetoric. Gold unchanged. Bitcoin little changed after pulling back from two-month high.

    • US and Taiwan reached trade deal that largely mirrored press leaks with tariff rate dropping to 15% from 20% and Taiwan to increase US investment by $500B ($250B in direct funding and $250B in credit guarantees). Bloomberg source said TSMC (2330.TT) to build at least four more chip factories in Arizona. TSMC rallied 4% in US following strong Q4 results, where margin beat, Q1 revenue guidance, upgraded capex estimate and upbeat AI commentary were among highlights. Results helped underpin AI sentiment with semis and AI-linked names among outperformers.

    • Ahead of next week's meeting, Bloomberg sources said BOJ officials monitoring impact of yen weakness, particularly how currency will affect underlying inflation, and implications for policy. While BOJ expected to leave rates on hold next week, yen weakness becoming more important policy consideration with officials mindful that it could prompt pull forward of future rate hikes. Yen has stabilized in past two sessions after approaching 18-month low against dollar, following repeated verbal warnings from Finance Minister Katayama.

    • Late Thursday, PBOC announced structural monetary policy tools will see 25 bp rate cuts. Central bank said rate cuts aimed at addressing economic weak links and market did register much of a reaction. Deputy Governor Zou added there is still some space to reduce RRR and policy rates this year. Comes after latest lending figures showed credit and loan growth picked up in December, signaling permeation of CNY500B in new financial instruments unveiled in September to accelerate investment projects.
